The number of agricultural tractors (over 50hp) registered in the UK in 2022 totalled 11,580 machines. That is 4% fewer than in 2021 but in line with the average for the previous five years. The total would no doubt have been higher but for the substantial disruption to global supply chains which meant companies were unable to keep up with demand from customers. Orders received were not as strong as in 2021 but were still above recent averages. Registrations did return to year-on-year growth in the final quarter of 2022, which may be an indication that extended lead times were starting to ease.

Combine harvester sales finished the year with healthy gains in unit sales while ag tractors finished the year below 2021 levels in both the U.S. and Canada.

Total U.S. ag tractor unit sales fell for both the month of December as well as the year as a whole compared to 2021, with the sub-40hp segment leading losses in both timeframes, losing 26.7 percent for the month and 19.3 percent for calendar 2022. U.S. self-propelled combine sales, however, grew 16.3 percent on the month, finishing the year up 15.8 percent. Agricultural equipment activity and the business climate rebounded in the third quarter of 2022.

The French agricultural equipment market posted growth close to +14% at the end of the first nine months of the year 2022.

The results after nine months are therefore positive, but we should take into account the optical effect of the figures expressed in value as Turnover, market, exports...

All these indicators show significant changes which are mainly, if not exclusively, explained by the increase in the price of equipment (+12% on average between the first nine months of 2022 and the same period of the previous year).

Tractor sales were down 9% in the last six months compared to the same six months last year. The reasons are as follows.

・There was a government subsidy for machine purchases in 2021, but there was no such subsidy in 2022.

・The farmers' investment motivation was low due to deterioration in the quality of agricultural products and the decrease in yield by heavy rain disasters in 2022.

Over the past 9 years, the production of agricultural machinery and its share on the domestic market have increased. In 2022, the production of agricultural machinery increased by 15%. However, by the end of 2022, exports decreased by 17%, and imports by 19%.

Tractor Market

For the first 6 months of 2022 the domestic tractor market in the Russian Federation grew only by 6%. But in the second half it grew up to 60%. Market growth in the second half of 2022 is associated with increases in the sectors of 40-100 hp (+102%) and more than 100 hp (+74%). As a result of 2022, the domestic tractor market grew by 21%.

Self-propelled combines

In hindsight, the strong potential of the regional markets and favorable rains throughout the country in the 2020 - 2021 season resulted in lucrative crop production, which led to high sales volumes for Turkish manufacturers. This helped the agricultural machinery industry recover from the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to preliminary data, the farm machinery exports of manufacturing companies brought in about 1,6 billion dollars in 2022. Thus, Turkey’s agricultural machinery exports spiked to 14.3 percent last year.
